The medical field has witnessed a debate about whether every loss of smell means Corona infection or not?
To find out the truth, Dr. Saud Saleh Al-Saif an ENT consultant, rhinoplasty, sinus surgery, nasal obstruction, and microsurgery at Al-Mana Hospital in Al-Khobar and Dammam revealed that loss of smell does not necessarily mean Corona infection because there are many factors that lead to this such as having a Flu, runny and stuffy nose, rhinitis and deviated Septum with enlargement of the nasal polyps as a result of sensitivity, as well as dryness of the mucous membranes lining the nasal cavity. These are simple examples of having a poor sense of smell or loss of smell.
More complex reasons, such as the influence of the olfactory nerve as a result of trauma to the nerve passages (crebriform plate) or injuries, as well as some tumors that lead to smells not reaching the nerve ends, but all of this is not sudden, but rather has precursors and the patient is well aware of this, and the sudden loss of smell is one of the indicators that is confirmed by smears.
He added, “Most of those infected with the Coronavirus can breathe freely, as they do not usually suffer from a blocked or runny nose, and besides the loss of smell, they may lose the sense of taste as well.”
Dr. Al-Saif confirmed that the researchers indicated that the matter is not that their sense of taste is a bit weak, but that it is disrupted in addition to the other symptoms of Corona virus, the main symptoms are: high temperature, cough, and loss of smell Or taste. Therefore anyone suffering from these symptoms must isolate himself and arrange for a swab test to verify whether he/ she is infected with the virus or not.
